There has been a steep rise in the diagnosis of all eating disorders over the last 60 years. The reasons why people develop eating and body image issues are varied and complex. Our latest booklet explores some of these reasons; looks at some of the most common eating disorders and common behaviours, thoughts, and feelings for each disorder; and provides information about what you can do if you think you may have an eating disorder or body image issue.
While the media has been widely blamed for creating the concept of the 'perfect body', this is just one small part of why people develop an unhealthy relationship with food and body. In truth, a whole number of issues may give rise to eating and body image issues including physiological/biological, psychological, and social/cultural issues.
